BIOGRAPHY:
Dr.
John P. Rier, Jr., was born in Boyce, VA and attended
public school in Clarke County, VA. He earned a
B.S. degree in biology from Virginia State College, an
M.S. Degree in botany from Howard University, M.A. and
Ph.D. degrees in biology from Harvard
University. His major teaching and research
interests in botany were plant tissue culture,
morphogenesis, physiology and anatomy.
Subsequent to a research fellowship at the George
Washington Carver Foundation in Tuskegee Institute, AL
and further graduate study, he held professorial and
administrative positions at Rutgers University and
Howard University. Federal agencies,
organizations and associations requested his services
as a consultant. His career spanned over 40
years, providing instruction and research training to
undergraduate and graduate students. Publishing
extensively, he encouraged students and colleagues in
their research endeavors. He was a member of
professional and scientific organizations, receiving
awards and citations in recognition of his
contributions to science, mentorship of students and
commitment to high academic performance. His
legacy is reflected in the accomplishments of former
students who are successfully participating in
teaching, research and administrative careers in
science.
